Heavy Equipment Work in Atlanta
On the city's west side, Georgia DOT began construction in July 2025 on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange, a Major Mobility Investment Program project that rebuilds the interchange, adds lanes on I-20 and I-285 and includes work on 19 bridges, with substantial completion expected in 2030. GDOT says its contractors are using controlled blasting at points along the corridor. Work like this puts dozers, excavators and haul trucks right next to live interstate traffic.
The city's own infrastructure is also in the ground. Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management runs a Capital Improvement Program for sustaining, restoring and modernizing its water and wastewater systems, alongside the Clean Water Atlanta program. The Atlanta Beltline continues to build parks, multi-use trails and transit along its historic 22-mile railroad corridor through intown neighborhoods. Each of these jobs involves trenching near buried utilities, working under overhead power lines and moving equipment through tight urban sites.

Interstate and interchange construction
The I-285/I-20 West Interchange project runs in Fulton and Cobb counties, with new lanes on I-20 from Factory Shoals Road to Hamilton E. Holmes Drive and on I-285 from MLK Jr. Drive to Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. Traffic work zones, haul trucks backing on narrow shoulders, and rock excavation near blasting areas are the main equipment hazards.
Water and sewer infrastructure
The Department of Watershed Management's capital work on water and wastewater lines and facilities puts backhoes and excavators in trenches in city streets. Cave-ins, strikes on gas, water and fiber lines, and struck-by incidents with passing traffic lead the list.
BeltLine and intown redevelopment

What Shapes Equipment Work in Atlanta
The City of Atlanta lies in both Fulton and DeKalb counties, and OSHA splits them between two area offices: Fulton goes to Atlanta West and DeKalb to Atlanta East. Georgia has no OSHA State Plan for private employers, so the same federal standards apply either way.
Georgia's High-voltage Safety Act bars work that could bring a person, equipment or materials within 10 feet of an overhead line over 750 volts until the line's owner has been notified and has put safety measures in place (O.C.G.A. § 46-3-33). Georgia 811 says that notice must be given at least 72 hours ahead, excluding weekends and holidays. OSHA's construction rules also require at least 10 feet of clearance from lines rated 50 kV or below (29 CFR 1926.600(a)(6)).
Under Georgia law, if every utility on a locate request responds before the notice period ends that its lines are marked or not in conflict, you may start work early (O.C.G.A. § 25-9-6(a)). Check the ticket's responses before you dig rather than assuming the full wait applies.
